Once in the body polio can either show no symptoms or can cause flu like symptoms that will lead to what’s next (Wilson 2). But, 90% of people will not have visible symptoms (Wilson 2). This is called inapparent polio (Wilson 2). Once the virus enters the body it does not gain a foothold onto the spinal cord (where the virus lives), which means that it causes no illness (Wilson 2). In 4-8% of infections poliovirus causes a minor illness that doctors refer to as "summer flu" (Wilson 2). Even though a patient might not have symptoms, they could still die from it, but have a low chance of it. For example it can be in their sleep, or maybe their heart just stops when they are walking (Wilson 2). The patient will not suffer in this way. This is called abortive poliomyelitis (Wilson 2).
