This crippling and deadly disease is cause by the poliovirus. It is an infectious disease that can spread from person to person and can invade the brain and spiral cord, causing paralysis ("Polio").
Abortive Poliomyelitis- Individuals whose spinal cords were invaded by the poliovirus but show no or mild symptoms

Paralytic Poliomyelitis- Destruction is extensive, muscle are permanently paralyzed, the patient will lose the ability to move or even breath (Wilson 2).

where did the name come from? |
To doctors polio is known as poliomyelitis (Wilson 2). It got its name from the Greek words that refer to parts of the spinal cord. It means inflammation of the gray marrow of the spinal cord. But, over time people became to know the virus as polio (Wilson 2).
